Easy And Secure Configuration For Nessus in Backtrack 5

No I am not referring to Nessus who is a centaur killed by Heracles! I am talking about the Nessus program or tool which is a vulnerability scanner and is pre-installed in Backtrack 5. Before a user can use it, he needs to register an activation key in the Tenable or Nessus Website which can be used in activating the tool.  And so let’s activate Nessus:

1. Enter the key using nessus-fetch command (Make sure you are connected to the net.duh!):

/opt/nessus/bin/nessus-fetch –register *code-****-*here**-****

2. Create a user and password (used for logging in to the Nessus Web Interface) for security purposes by typing:

/opt/nessus/sbin/nessus-adduser

3. Start the service or process by typing:

/etc/init.d/nessusd start

4. And lastly, access the web interface and start playing. The web interface can be accessed with your browser by making an HTTPS connection to TCP port 8834 (e.g. https://127.0.0.1:8834/).
